Living in the Shadow of Meltdown: An Unheard Cry from Japan

In 2011, Yogan Baum had built a family, a home and a new life in Yotsukura, a quiet Japanese fishing town just twenty miles from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.

Until March 11.

“Life is precious. It is fragile. We have to treasure it if we want to survive. Wake up! Fukushima is only the tip of the iceberg.”

– Yogan Baum

The magnitude 9.0 earthquake, the devastating tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear disaster shattered his world and changed his life forever.

The Voice of Fukushima is a deeply personal memoir trilogy about survival, trauma and the struggle to understand what happened after 3/11. Through memories, personal reflections and the years that followed, Yogan Baum tells the story of a man living in the shadow of a nuclear catastrophe while searching for answers beyond the official narrative.

For Yogan, Fukushima is not simply a disaster of the past. It remains a wound in a country struggling to move on. His journey is a cry from the heart — and a warning that Fukushima may be only the tip of the iceberg.

On March 11, 2011, Yogan Baum experienced the magnitude 9.0 Tohoku megaquake firsthand, living just twenty miles from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. Ground Zero 01: Earthquake takes the reader into those terrifying first moments — the violence, the confusion and the dawning realization that this was only the beginning.

The tsunami has passed, but Yogan Baum soon realizes that the worst is yet to come. Searching for his wife, he watches the signs of a catastrophe unfolding around him. What follows is a three-day odyssey through a Japan on the brink — ending with an escape from Fukushima and a view of the disaster from above.
